Cyprian Lifestyle
Lifestyle

The Northern part of island is largely unspoilt by commercial tourism, combined with its ancient history, untouched nature, spacious beaches and delicious cuisine at affordable prices, makes this lifestyle a genuinely unique pleasure.

The relaxed pace of life is typical with most Mediterranean countries, and although there is no cultural pattern of the siesta – the relaxed nature exists especially in the hotter months. You will gently adjust from the hectic pace of the British lifestyle to that of North Cyprus and gradually notice your lunches becoming longer as you enjoy the slower pace of life.

Northern Cyprus is a virtually crime free area which will remind you of Britain in the 1960s. The famed Northern Cypriot hospitality will overwhelm you with its generosity, hospitality, warmth and politeness in a way reminiscent of welcoming you into their community – not simply as a tourist.

Health
The cost of medical treatment in the local hospitals is lower than comparative care in the UK depending of course on the type of treatment required. Accident and emergency facilities are available at local hospitals. It is recommended that you seek a local GP, many of whom have had UK experience, for many minor ailments. Private healthcare is also available through a number of international medical insurance companies if required. Dental treatment is of a high standard and charges are moderate.

Education
General education standards in the TRNC are of a very high standard and are borne out by the fact that there are four universities based in Northern Cyprus. The majority of schools offer bilingual education starting with kindergarten through secondary school and finally university.

Eating
There is a fantastic selection of excellent restaurants ranging from authentic Cypriot cuisine to Chinese, Indian, Italian and even Thai! See below for a small selection of popular restaurants. There are also extremely good value meals to be found at Kyrenia harbour with 3 course meals staring from £8 with a beautiful setting.

  • Jashans Restaurant Authentic Indian and European restaurant - Karaoglanoglu
  • Verandah Restaurant Popular restaurant on the seafront serving international cuisine - Karaoglanoglu
  • Address Restaurant Busy seafront restaurant serving kebabs and European fare - Karaoglanoglu
  • Le Jardin British run restaurant in pretty setting, serving European cuisine - Catalkoy
Community
The British Community is growing very fast as more and more Brits (from young business people, through to retired and families with children) buy property in Northern Cyprus and come to permanently live on the northern side of the island.

There is a local English newspaper which will help you to know what's going on the island and get your messages through to the community. Most of the supermarkets and local corner shops sell the weekly English paper “Cyprus Today”, which is published every Saturday. All forthcoming events – concerts, charity events, evening and day entertainment, as well as useful information and advertisements from different business, restaurants and bars are advertised here. In addition, most British papers are available from most Hotels.

You will quickly find local amenities, restaurants and other social venues a plenty occupied by like minded Brits enjoying their new life in the sun. In addition there are many small businesses that exist started by Brits who have re-located and you will have many opportunities to become involved in local community events and meet friends if you so wish of British origin. You will also find that there is not a separation of ‘locals’ and ‘tourists’, like in many other places, but that the local community share many of the same background, interests, and indeed businesses with the British who live there.

It is often mentioned, that you don’t feel as much of a tourist in Northern Cyprus, more part of the community. This is due in no small part to the characteristics of the Northern Cypriots and the many generations of international people who have settled there – ensuring a unique community experience that can be whatever you wish it to be. (Full English breakfast is available everywhere should you not want to change too much!)

Benefits of North Cyprus
The northern part of island is largely unspoilt by commercial tourism, combined with its ancient history, untouched nature, spacious beaches and delicious cuisine at affordable prices, makes this area a genuinely unique pleasure.

The cost of living in Northern Cyprus is significantly cheaper than anywhere else in the Mediterranean, whilst property prices in the southern part are expensive, prices are still low in the North making property an extremely attractive option with high build quality and beautiful designs providing a sound investment with strong capital growth. Direct flights are expected to be available within the next year reducing the flying time from 6 hours to 4. Alternatively you can fly directly to Larnaca in the South and transfer across the border.
